Welcome to Castle Fisheries, in the western Lake District. We offer fishing on the River Derwent, one of the finest salmon and sea trout rivers in the north of England.

Cockermouth, a beautiful town in the western Lake District, makes an excellent base, with many good hotels, restaurants and shops.

The River Derwent rises beneath Scafell Pike, flows through Derwentwater and Bassenthwaite Lake and then passes through the rolling countryside of the Derwent valley before entering the Irish Sea at Workington.  It is an intimate fast flowing river with attractive pools and a particularly beautiful setting.  8 fishing huts are provided along the 12 miles of river, covering our ten beats and 37 pools.  Friendly and experienced ghillies are available to assist, if required.

"England's best-kept secret". "The water was as pristine as I've seen in Norway and Iceland".

(Andrew Flitcroft - Trout and Salmon July 2015)

The annual catch has averaged 756 salmon and 70 sea trout over the past five years.  There is also a good population of wild brown trout.  Most fishing is double banked, and it is possible to take a beat by the day for a whole season with prices starting from £1,000 for two rods.  Day tickets are also possible by arrangement, with prices from £100 per day for two rods – even less, early in the season.

The Cumbria fishing is managed from the Estate Office at Cockermouth Castle by the Estate's administrators, Savills.

Was it for this
That one, the fairest of all rivers, loved
To blend his murmurs with my nurse's song,
And, from his alder shades and rocky falls,
And from his fords and shallows, sent a voice
That flowed along my dreams?
For this, didst thou,
O Derwent! winding among grassy holms
Where I was looking on, a babe in arms,
Make ceaseless music that composed my thoughts
To more than infant softness, giving me
Amid the fretful dwellings of mankind
A foretaste, a dim earnest, of the calm
That Nature breathes among the hills and groves.

William Wordsworth 1771-1850
